Montreal weather is usually classified as continental, although in actual fact it’s an amalgam of different types, thanks to the city’s positioning on the crossroads of several climatic regions. Effectively, because of the city’s proximity to the Atlantic Ocean, weather in Montreal is notable for the wild fluctuation in patterns experienced during different seasons, as well as its tendency to change rapidly. Although typical of other Canadian cities where summers are hot and winters cold, Montreal weather is overall significantly warmer than other areas in the country, an attribute most evident in its summer season with its finer conditions.
Summer Weather in Montreal
During the summer season, Montreal weather remains warm throughout, with temperatures averaging highs of 26°C and lows of 16°C. It does however tend to get muggy especially when mercury soars to levels that exceed 30°C. July and August are unquestionably the hottest months of the year, not only in Montreal but also across Canada. One of the unfortunate downsides of weather in Montreal is the fact that rain showers are quite often, even during summer, threatening to spoil even the finest of fine weather spells. Common as they might be though, these showers are also short in duration, plus they are usually followed by abundant amounts of sunshine.
Autumn Weather in Montreal
Autumn is considered to be the best time to visit Montreal. And with good reason, as during this season Montreal weather is at its finest. Temperatures are still rather warm, usually hovering around 19°C, and the overall sense is that of an Indian summer. Moreover, during the fall season the sugar maples are an absolute feast for the eyes, adding splashes of colour of all shades to an already impressive autumnal landscape.
Winter Weather in Montreal
When winter sets over the city, Montreal weather becomes increasingly colder, the chilly wind that almost permanently blows through it immensely contributing to the overall atmosphere. Understandably, during winter temperatures in Montreal are at their absolute lowest, taking a nose dive during January when it permanently remains bellow zero, averaging around -6°C.
Most of winter’s precipitation falls during October and November, both months experiencing an average of eight to nine rainy days. In contrast, December and January only receive rainfall for an average of around just four to five days. Both months however enjoy the bulk of the city’s annual snowfall, which stands at approximately 2.1 meters / 6.9 feet.
Spring Weather in Montreal
Montreal weather during spring retains a rather pleasant disposition throughout the season. Following the harshness of winter the rise in temperatures is most certainly welcomed by locals and visitors alike. Although snow flurries should not be completely ruled out, weather in Montreal is particularly likeable, with temperatures peaking towards the end of May, when they reach a rather warm 18°C on average.
